PROJECT: On March 20-27, 2018, a small group of Utah women will be traveling from Utah to Puerto Rico to help with rebuilding efforts. Hurricane Maria was the most destructive natural disaster to ever hit Puerto Rico. It decimated the YWCA in San Juan— a 150 year-old historical building—with an estimated $100,000 in damage. Because this particular YWCA serves the poorest women and children in San Juan, it has become a priority for the San Juan Rotary Club to restore it. The San Juan Rotary Club is active in seeking support to rebuild the YWCA, committing $2,500 of their own funds to help, and securing $10,000 from a Rotary Club in San Diego. Also, they were recently visited by a women’s group in New York who focused on teaching carpentry skills (click here for a recent story by NBC). Additionally, local young Rotary-affiliated high-school students are helping with efforts.
REQUEST: We are trying to raise $5,000, which will give us the funds needed for paint supplies, doors, windows, etc. needed for our team and anyone working alongside us during our trip. Our team’s visit, and your hopeful contributions, are a small gesture in the scheme of things. But all we hope for is to lighten the load of our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico, offering them some hope, reminding them that they are not forgotten, and that we are united to help their precious island prosper again.
